In the spring of 2023, the life of Rasheeda Williams, a 35-year-old Black transgender woman known to many by her stage name Koko Da Doll, was tragically cut short on the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. On the evening of April 18th, police responded to a call of a person shot near a shopping plaza in the southwest part of the city. Upon arrival, they discovered Williams unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Her death marked the third fatal shooting of a transgender woman in Atlanta that year, sending ripples of fear and grief through the community.
Williams had recently gained a measure of prominence for her appearance in the documentary 'Kokomo City,' which had premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim. The film offered a raw and humanizing look into the lives of four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York. In the documentary, Williams shared her experiences, her struggles, and her dreams, offering a voice to a community often marginalized and misunderstood. Her friends and family remembered her as a vibrant and courageous woman who was proud of who she was and was excited about the future possibilities that the film's success might bring.
The investigation into Williams's death moved swiftly. Atlanta police released surveillance images of a person of interest, seeking the public's help in identifying the individual. The community's response was immediate, and tips began to pour in. Just over a week after the shooting, on April 26th, a 17-year-old named Jermarcus Jernigan turned himself in to the authorities. While he admitted to being the person in the surveillance photos, he denied any involvement in the shooting.
Despite his denial, Jernigan was arrested and charged as an adult with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A witness reported seeing Williams arguing with a man shortly before the sound of gunshots rang out. Surveillance footage from a nearby business reportedly captured the argument and the subsequent shooting, showing a man in a white hoodie, which matched Jernigan's attire, firing shots before fleeing the scene. Jernigan was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail, as the legal process to seek justice for Rasheeda Williams began.
