On a tragic day in December 2024, the life of 25-year-old Kaylyn Samuels, a Black female, was cut short in a devastating act of violence in DeKalb County, Georgia. On December 7th, authorities were called to the Vineyard Walk apartment complex for a welfare check, where they made a grim discovery. Inside one of the apartments, they found the bodies of Kaylyn, her two young children, 5-year-old Jedorah Powell and 1-year-old Jontavious Powell, and her 43-year-old mother-in-law, Mollian Johnson.
All four victims had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the horrific scene quickly pointed to a murder-suicide. The fifth person found deceased in the apartment was 32-year-old Jonathan Darden, who was in a relationship with Mollian Johnson. Investigators determined that Darden had shot and killed Johnson, Samuels, and her two children before turning the gun on himself.
Family members were left reeling from the sudden and senseless loss. A relative, Chanel Carter, revealed that her mother, Mollian Johnson, had been planning to end her relationship with Darden, suggesting that domestic issues may have been the catalyst for the tragedy. Carter also shared that her mother had previously expressed concerns about Darden's behavior to a friend. The family, originally from Milwaukee, was faced with the heartbreaking task of raising funds to transport the bodies of their loved ones back home for burial. The community was left in a state of shock and disbelief over the incident that claimed the lives of a young mother and her two innocent children, along with their grandmother.
