In the winter of 2023, a promising life was tragically cut short in Atlanta, Georgia. Aneicia Elizabeth Temple, a 25-year-old female, died on January 28, 2023, from a gunshot wound. The incident that led to her untimely death unfolded in a breezeway at the Northside Plaza Apartment Homes on Markham Street in the Castleberry Hill neighborhood. Responding officers arrived at the scene around 2:30 p.m. to find Temple grievously wounded.
She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The initial investigation pointed towards a domestic dispute gone horribly wrong. Authorities quickly identified her boyfriend, 23-year-old Shyheem Donley, as the person responsible for the fatal shooting. According to initial reports, Donley was 'playing with a gun' when it discharged, striking Temple. He was subsequently arrested and faced serious criminal charges in connection with her death.
Shyheem Donley was initially charged with murder for the death of Aneicia Temple. However, the legal proceedings took a turn in April 2024. Donley accepted a plea deal, which saw the murder charge reduced to involuntary manslaughter. In addition to the manslaughter charge, he also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. An aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge was dropped as part of the agreement.
As a result of his guilty plea, Shyheem Donley was sentenced to 10 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. He received an additional five years of probation for the firearm charge. A condition of his probation requires him to obtain his GED, seek and maintain gainful employment, and he is prohibited from possessing any firearms. While the initial belief was that the shooting was accidental, court documents later indicated that Donley was accused of intentionally pulling the trigger.
