In the winter of 2019, the life of a young woman from Riverdale, Georgia, was tragically cut short in southeast Atlanta. Seventeen-year-old Roberta Robinson, a female who was just a month shy of her eighteenth birthday, was fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head. The incident occurred in the late afternoon, around 4:30 p.m., in the 200 block of Springside Drive.
Initially, she was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition, clinging to life, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting pointed not to a malicious act of violence, but to a case of profound negligence. According to Atlanta police, 19-year-old Jamal Thomas of Atlanta was recklessly handling a handgun when it discharged, the bullet striking Robinson. In the days following the shooting, as Robinson fought for her life, Thomas made the decision to turn himself in to the authorities. His surrender led to his arrest in connection with the teenager's death.
Following his arrest, Jamal Thomas was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. During his initial court appearance, he was denied bond, and a future court date was set for early February of that year. The investigation also revealed that at the time of the shooting, Thomas was already facing charges from a separate incident in September 2018, which included criminal trespassing and theft. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of a young life on the cusp of adulthood, a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of irresponsible firearm handling.
