In the early morning hours of October 20, 2020, Eva M. Jones, a 59-year-old grandmother, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting as she slept in her apartment on Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta. The incident occurred just before 6:00 a.m. when multiple shots were fired into her ground-floor unit at the Pavilion Place Apartments. Jones was struck by several bullets and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
At the time of the shooting, her boyfriend was in another room of the apartment and was not injured.
Family members, who were preparing to celebrate her 60th birthday the following month, were devastated by the loss. They described Jones as a joyous and generous person who loved to make people laugh. Her relatives believe that she was not the intended target of the attack, suggesting that the shooter or shooters were actually aiming for her boyfriend. While police confirmed that the apartment was targeted, they did not immediately release a motive for the shooting.
The investigation into the death of Eva Jones led to the arrest of two individuals. A 16-year-old was taken into custody and charged with murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and firearm possession offenses. A second suspect, 29-year-old Shykil Scott, was also arrested and charged with armed robbery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with the case.
