On a late September evening in 2019, a night of leisure and entertainment turned into a scene of tragedy for 26-year-old Kevin Mcleod-Downer. The young man, a male, was with his girlfriend and two friends at the Round1 Bowling & Arcade inside the Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia, Georgia. An otherwise unremarkable evening took a dark turn when a group of men, including Jermel Campbell and Trayvon Williams, began making unwanted advances toward Mcleod-Downer's girlfriend. When she rebuffed their attempts, the men reportedly took it as a sign of disrespect, setting in motion a chain of events that would end in fatal violence.

As Kevin Mcleod-Downer and his friends attempted to leave the mall, a verbal dispute with the other group escalated in the parking lot between the movie theater and the arcade. The situation quickly spiraled out of control as Campbell and Williams, along with a third man, Taron Williams, pursued Mcleod-Downer's group. As Mcleod-Downer and his friends sought cover behind their vehicle, Jermel Campbell opened fire, unleashing a barrage of 15 shots in their direction. Surveillance footage captured Trayvon Williams retrieving a handgun from a car and exchanging gunfire with a friend of Mcleod-Downer. In a final, brutal act, Campbell took the gun from Trayvon Williams and continued shooting, firing the shot that would ultimately kill Kevin Mcleod-Downer as he shielded his girlfriend from the onslaught.

In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement identified three suspects. Taron Williams turned himself in to the DeKalb County Police, and Jermel Campbell also surrendered to authorities. The third suspect, Trayvon Ramon Williams, was later apprehended by the DeKalb County Sheriff's Fugitive Unit and U.S. Marshals. All three men were charged with murder.

The legal process culminated in the conviction of Jermel Campbell, 30, and Trayvon Williams, 29. In March 2024, a jury found both men guilty of malice murder, felony murder, multiple counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. They were each sentenced to life in prison, with an additional 25 years to be served consecutively, bringing a measure of justice for the senseless killing of Kevin Mcleod-Downer.
