In the early morning hours of November 21, 2019, tragedy struck in Savannah, Georgia, when 45-year-old Leopoldo Corona was fatally shot. The incident occurred at a residence on Fairmont Avenue, where officers responded to a shooting call around 2 a.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Corona suffering from life-threatening injuries to which he ultimately succumbed.
The Savannah Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit immediately began a homicide investigation.
For months, detectives worked to piece together the events that led to Corona's untimely death. Their efforts eventually pointed to a single suspect.
In a significant development, on May 11, 2020, authorities identified 19-year-old Marcus Speaks as the individual responsible for the death of Leopoldo Corona. At the time of being identified as the suspect in Corona's murder, Speaks was already incarcerated at the Chatham County Detention Center on unrelated charges. It was there that he was served with a warrant for murder, officially linking him to the fatal shooting that had taken place nearly six months prior.
