In the fading light of a Friday evening in Macon, Georgia, on November 22, 2019, the life of 23-year-old Jayme Divine Johnson was tragically cut short. Just before 8:30 p.m., in the 3800 block of Middleton Avenue, Johnson was found lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt arrival of law enforcement and emergency services, his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident marked the city's 23rd homicide of the year.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, which was initiated by an anonymous call to their dispatch center. For several days, investigators worked to piece together the events that led to Johnson's death. Their efforts soon focused on a single suspect, 25-year-old Darren Ameen Fields.
Just four days after the fatal shooting, on November 26, 2019, the investigation culminated in an arrest. Members of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office Violent Crime Investigators, in collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, apprehended Fields at the Bibb County Probation Office. Following an interview with detectives, Fields was transported to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center and formally charged with the murder of Jayme Divine Johnson. He was subsequently held without bond.
