In the summer of 2023, a young Black man, Eric Payton Thomas Jr., 21, was found dead in his vehicle in Macon, Georgia. The discovery was made just before 8 p.m. on Friday, June 16, in a parking lot located at 2241 Montpelier Avenue. Emergency services were called to the scene, where Thomas was found to have sustained a fatal gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the deputy coroner.
