In the summer of 2019, a community in Olympia, Washington, was unsettled by the disappearance of 58-year-old Susan Therese Lundy. A mother and a familiar face in her community, known for her work as a doula and for coordinating produce donations for a local food bank, her sudden silence was out of character. Susan was officially reported missing on July 6, 2019, by her daughter, Amara Lundy, who lived with her. Amara told authorities she had last seen her mother on June 30 at their residence in the 1400 block of Division Street Northwest. Concern grew when, just two days later, Susan's passport and credit card were discovered in West Olympia, suggesting her disappearance was not voluntary. Friends and family expressed that it was highly unusual for Susan to be out of contact, amplifying the urgency and mystery of her case. The investigation into Susan Lundy's disappearance took a dark and disturbing turn in August 2019 when her 23-year-old daughter, Amara, was charged with her murder. Although Susan was reported missing in July, investigators came to believe she was actually killed in late May or early June. The relationship between mother and daughter had reportedly been strained due to Susan's struggles with alcohol and her disapproval of Amara's boyfriend, Ryan Parker. The situation had escalated to the point where Susan had forbidden Parker from visiting their home. On August 12, Amara confessed to the police, stating she had grown tired of her mother and believed her death would improve life for several people. She provided a grim account of strangling her mother with a yellow cord she had purchased for the act. In her confession, Amara Lundy detailed the gruesome events that followed her mother's death. She admitted to leaving her mother's body in a yard waste bin for a week before deciding she needed to dispose of it. With a large knife and a small saw, she dismembered the body, wrapped the parts in plastic, and, with the help of her boyfriend Ryan Parker, used a shopping cart from a local grocery store to dispose of the remains in various dumpsters and private trash bins around Olympia. In August 2020, Amara Lundy pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was subsequently sentenced to eight and a half years in prison. Ryan Parker pleaded guilty to rendering criminal assistance and was sentenced to one year in jail. Despite the convictions, the case remains a tragedy without complete closure, as Susan Lundy's body has never been found. The initial missing person report evolved into a homicide investigation that uncovered a deeply troubled mother-daughter relationship, culminating in a confession that shocked the community and left a family grappling with an unimaginable loss.
