In the late hours of a Thursday in June, a veteran's life was tragically cut short in his own home. Gary Walker, a 69-year-old male, was shot shortly before midnight on June 4, 2020, near the front door of his residence on Lorenzo Drive in southwest Atlanta. A man who had served his country in both the U.S. Air Force and the Navy, he spent his later years caring for his disabled sister.
The Atlanta Police Department began an investigation into the homicide, seeking the public's
assistance in identifying a suspect. According to investigators, the shooter was believed to be wearing a gray hoodie and a white surgical mask. It is thought the suspect fled the scene in a small, black car notable for its loud exhaust.
In the months following the shooting, the search for answers continued. Walker's sister recalled hearing the gunshots from her room and rushing to her brother's aid, finding him covered in blood. She believed the altercation may have started outside before he tried to retreat into the house with the assailant following him. A reward for information leading to an arrest in the case was increased to $5,000. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Gary Walker.
