In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Valdosta, Georgia, the life of 24-year-old Tommy TJ Simmons Jr. was tragically cut short. On June 14, 2020, at approximately 10:37 p.m., the Valdosta Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting in the 500 block of Hudson Street. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Simmons with apparent gunshot wounds to his body.
They immediately began to provide first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported him to South Georgia Medical Center, where he was ultimately pronounced deceased. The incident was treated as a homicide from the outset, with detectives from the Valdosta Police Department and crime scene personnel from the Valdosta Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory launching a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of two suspects believed to be involved in Simmons' death. Valdosta Police Department Person's Crime Detectives identified Ivanson Xavier Davis and Michael Jermaine Evans as the individuals connected to the fatal shooting. By the following day, June 15, 2020, detectives had secured arrest warrants for both men. Davis was wanted for felony murder, while Evans faced a charge of party to the crime of felony murder. At the time the warrants were issued, the whereabouts of both Davis and Evans were unknown, and they were considered to be armed and dangerous.
In the months that followed, law enforcement's efforts to bring the suspects to justice saw a significant development. On September 10, 2020, investigators with the Special Operations Division of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a location in the 4800 block of Bemiss Road, which resulted in the arrest of Ivan Xavier Davis. Later, in July of 2021, the second suspect, Michael Jermaine Evans, surrendered himself to authorities on the outstanding warrant for his alleged involvement in the crime.
The legal process for Ivan Xavier Davis culminated in a jury trial in 2022. The case against the then 25-year-old went to the jury, which ultimately convicted him of felony murder, possession of a firearm during a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon for his role in the 2020 slaying of Tommy Simmons. Following the conviction, Davis was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge, with an additional 15 years combined for the other charges. The case against Michael Jermaine Evans was reported to be still open.
