On a summer evening in Hinesville, Georgia, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of 29-year-old Tyler Sledge. The incident, which occurred on July 10, 2020, unfolded at a residence on Kelly Drive, forever altering the lives of those involved. Sledge, a male, was at the center of a heated argument with his girlfriend when a third individual, Christopher Richie, intervened.
The verbal altercation took a tragic turn when Richie allegedly introduced a firearm into the volatile situation. According to police reports, Richie, who was a frequent visitor to the home, retrieved a gun and confronted Sledge. In the ensuing moments, Sledge was struck by a single gunshot to his upper torso. Hinesville Police officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of shots fired within the mobile home. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sledge unresponsive. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Richie fled the area, prompting a manhunt by law enforcement. He was located and apprehended in neighboring Long County the following day, on July 11, 2020. Following his arrest, Christopher Richie was charged with murder, felony murder, and aggravated assault in connection with the death of Tyler Sledge.
Richie was subsequently booked into the Liberty County Jail. During his initial court appearance in mid-July 2020, he was denied bond. In a later hearing on August 17, 2020, in Liberty County Superior Court, a judge once again denied his bond. The charges against him stemmed from his alleged role in the fatal shooting that authorities believe was the result of his intervention in a domestic dispute.
