Deshaun Lamar Scott, a 36-year-old African American man, was killed on October 21, 2020, in Quitman, Georgia. His life was cut short by fatal gunshot wounds in a tragic event that also claimed the life of 56-year-old John Timothy Thompson. The bodies of both men were discovered on Emerson Road, near Grooverville Road in the southern part of Brooks County, prompting an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Scott, who was from Cleveland, Ohio, had traveled to Quitman with Thompson, who was visiting family in the area. Their journey took a fatal turn, leading investigators to another man from their hometown, 36-year-old Kenny Pruitt. It was revealed that Pruitt had traveled to Quitman with three other men just a few days prior, on October 18, 2020. The circumstances that led to the deadly encounter were not entirely clear, though it was reported that Pruitt had been angry with Scott about an issue that arose after a trip they had taken to Atlanta the day before the shooting.
Kenny Pruitt was arrested without incident and subsequently charged with two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and multiple firearms offenses. He was booked into the Brooks County Jail. During the investigation, Pruitt claimed that he had acted in self-defense, stating that he shot Scott and Thompson in response to a threat. However, investigators were unable to find any witnesses to support his claim.
The case proceeded to trial, where the prosecution argued that the killings were premeditated. Despite the lack of direct witnesses, the jury was convinced of Pruitt's guilt. In March 2023, Kenny Pruitt was convicted for the murders of Deshaun Lamar Scott and John Timothy Thompson. He received a sentence of two consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal proceedings and ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions.
