In the winter of 2021, a heinous act of violence shattered the peace of a quiet Augusta, Georgia neighborhood and left a family reeling from an unimaginable loss. 73-year-old Jeannette Turner and her 75-year-old husband, Hilton Turner, were found brutally murdered in their lifelong home on East Hale Street on February 17th. The couple, who had been married for 55 years, were retired and described as upstanding members of their community.
Jeannette, who had dedicated nearly 30 years to a career in healthcare, was mostly bed-ridden and was lovingly cared for by her husband.
Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office believe the couple was shot and killed sometime after 6:40 p.m. on the evening of February 16, 2021. The discovery was made the following day when Jeannette's twin sister and her husband went to check on them and found the door to their home open. The scene inside was a tragedy that would forever alter the lives of their children and the community that held them in high regard. Despite the violent nature of the crime, it appeared that nothing was taken from the home, adding a perplexing layer to the investigation.
In the years since the double homicide, the case has grown cold, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. Law enforcement officials have indicated they suspect the person or persons responsible were likely familiar with the Turners, but have not released further details to support this theory. The family, desperate for answers and justice, has repeatedly pleaded with the public for any information that could help investigators solve this senseless crime. A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. The children of Hilton and Jeannette Turner continue to keep their parents' memory alive and hold out hope that one day, the person who so violently ended their lives will be brought to justice.
