In the summer of 1959, a domestic disturbance in Augusta, Georgia, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the lives of two young sisters and a police officer. The quiet of a Sunday, June 14th, was shattered at a residence on Wrightsboro Road, the home of the Hofer family.
The conflict began when the estranged husband of the children's mother broke into the house.
Responding to a call for help, Officer Joe Reynolds of the Augusta Police Department arrived at the scene with a fellow officer. Upon their arrival, the situation quickly turned violent. The girls' father, armed and dangerous, opened fire on the officers. Officer Reynolds, an 18-year veteran of the force, was fatally wounded in the exchange.
Following the shooting of the officer, the father turned his violence towards his own children. He shot and killed his two young daughters, 4-year-old Vicki Ann Hofer and 2-year-old Mary Kathleen Hofer. In a final, desperate act, the man then took his own life. The second officer present at the scene had to retreat after running out of ammunition during the gunfight and was unable to prevent the subsequent deaths of the children and their father.
Due to the perpetrator's suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the deaths of Vicki Ann Hofer, Mary Kathleen Hofer, and Officer Joe Reynolds. The incident was a murder-suicide, leaving a lasting scar on the Augusta community and the families affected by the sudden and brutal loss of life.
