In August of 2022, the life of a 43-year-old woman, Cynthia Wright, was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. On the 23rd of that month, she was fatally shot while at her job as an overnight security guard at a distribution center for Union Agner Animal Health on Fifth Street. Her body was discovered at the facility, marking another instance of gun violence in the community.
The investigation into her death quickly identified a suspect.
Two days after Wright's body was found, Cornell Thomas was arrested in connection with the shooting. His arrest took place on Mims Road. The motive and the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter were not immediately made public, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden loss of one of its members.
In July 2024, justice was served in the case of Cynthia Wright's murder. Cornell Thomas was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Under the terms of his sentence, he will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. Should he be released, he will remain on probation for the rest of his life and will be barred from entering any county in Georgia except for Fulton County.
