Shaneikwa Latorya LaFavor, a 29-year-old Black woman from Augusta, was killed on May 22, 2023, when gunfire tore through her home on East Taylor Street, turning an ordinary evening into a scene of devastation. Authorities said she was shot at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene. The violence did not end with her death. An adult man, identified in later reporting as Darius Mayo, was critically wounded, and an 11-year-old child was also shot and injured.
Public reports and family fundraising messages said LaFavor was pregnant at the time, and that her unborn daughter also died as a result of the attack.
In the days and months that followed, her killing became more than a homicide case. It became a source of grief and anger for relatives and for people in Augusta who believed the person accused in the shooting remained free for far too long. Reporting identified Shawn Antonio Walker as the suspect, and authorities said warrants were issued accusing him of murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. According to later coverage, investigators believed the shooting also left Mayo gravely wounded after he was struck multiple times.
The arrest did not come immediately. Walker was ultimately taken into custody on January 29, 2025, after law enforcement officers located him at a residence on Watkins Street in Augusta. Reports said members of the Southeastern U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office tried to make contact with him, but he refused to come out and barricaded himself inside. A SWAT response followed, and after a standoff, officers arrested him without further incident. By then, the case had already lingered in public memory as the killing of a young mother-to-be inside her own home, with two other people wounded in the same burst of violence.
The case eventually moved beyond the search for a suspect and into conviction and punishment. Later reporting said Walker was tried in Richmond County Superior Court, found guilty, and sentenced to life without parole plus an additional 232 years, 11 months, and 13 days. Coverage of the verdict said prosecutors described the shooting as an execution and said the dispute that led to the bloodshed was over a parking space. He was convicted not only in LaFavor’s killing, but also in the shootings that wounded Mayo and the child. What began as a terrifying attack inside a residence ended with a sentence meant to ensure the man held responsible would never return to the street, but it did nothing to soften the brutality of how Shaneikwa LaFavor’s life ended or the loss carried by the family she left behind.
