On May 2, 2002, while serving as a member of the Heart of Texas Auto Theft Task Force, he was tragically shot and killed in an ambush in Shive, Hamilton County. Sergeant Davenport and his fellow officers were attempting to search a rural property for stolen farm equipment when the incident occurred.
As Sergeant Davenport and his team were obtaining consent to search the property from a woman in the home, he noticed movement in a nearby barn and moved to investigate. Unfortunately, as he approached the barn, he was shot with a high-powered rifle by the suspect hiding inside. The suspect then engaged the other two officers in a prolonged gunfight, pinning them down for over an hour before fleeing into the nearby woods. The suspect was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Sergeant Davenport had served in law enforcement for 11 years, having previously worked with the Teague Police Department, Harris County Constable's Office, and the Mexia Police Department. He is remembered fondly by his family, including his parents and two brothers, as well as his colleagues in law enforcement.
