On a Saturday afternoon, March 27, 2021, 37-year-old Brian Lamar Sclafford-Clemons, a male, left his Austell, Georgia, home with his 8-year-old daughter to make a quick trip to a nearby RaceTrac gas station for snacks. As he waited in the left turn lane on Austell Road to enter the gas station, a black BMW and a white Lexus pulled up alongside his Nissan Altima and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. Sclafford-Clemons was struck seven times and died at the scene.
His daughter, who was in the back seat, was miraculously unharmed by the gunfire, though she sustained minor injuries from debris. A witness who rescued the child from the bullet-riddled car described it as looking like 'Swiss cheese.'
The brazen daylight shooting initially left investigators with few leads and no apparent motive. Sclafford-Clemons's wife, Taryn Clemons, described her husband as a hardworking truck driver and a loving father to their three children, with no known enemies. Detectives from the Cobb County Police Department began a meticulous investigation, reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station and surrounding businesses. The footage revealed the two suspect vehicles, a black 2021 BMW M440i and a white 2006-2012 Lexus IS250, had been circling the victim's neighborhood for more than three hours before the ambush.
A significant break in the case came when a detective discovered an accident report from Atlanta involving the BMW, which was registered in Florida. The driver in that accident was identified as Jermari Ferron. This vital piece of information allowed authorities to connect Ferron to two other men, Diomante Plummer and Claubert Mimy. On September 24, 2021, a coordinated effort between the Cobb County Police and U.S. Marshals led to the arrests of the three suspects. Ferron was apprehended in Coral Springs, Florida, Plummer was arrested in Miami-Dade County, and Mimy was taken into custody in Powder Springs, Georgia. Both of the vehicles used in the shooting were recovered in Florida on the same day.
Following a four-week trial, during which over 1,500 pieces of evidence were presented, a Cobb County jury convicted Jermari Ferron, 23, Diomante Plummer, 27, and Claubert Mimy, 24, of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, second-degree cruelty to children, and reckless conduct. In June 2025, a Cobb Superior Court Judge sentenced each of the three men to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 40 years. The prosecution argued that the men's actions had put numerous innocent lives at risk and that the verdict delivered long-overdue justice to the Sclafford-Clemons family and the community.
