In the summer of 2018, a quiet Austell, Georgia, apartment became the scene of a meticulously planned and cold-blooded murder. Andres Meza Munguia, a 33-year-old Hispanic man, was shot multiple times as he slept on his couch on July 29, 2018. The subsequent investigation would unravel a conspiracy orchestrated by his own roommate.
Initially, the scene was one of feigned discovery.
Munguia's roommate, Santos Tomas Vasquez, and another man, Fredy Jimenez, returned to the apartment over an hour after the killing and called the police, pretending to have just found the body. However, the diligent work of law enforcement soon exposed their deception. Investigators discovered that Vasquez, 38 at the time, had been the mastermind behind the murder plot, enlisting the help of Jimenez, 35, and two younger men, 23-year-old Dorian Acosta and 19-year-old Anthony Lopez.
The evidence pieced together by detectives, including cell tower data, phone records, and surveillance footage, revealed a chilling timeline. In the early hours of that Sunday morning, Vasquez and Jimenez drove Acosta and Lopez to the apartment on Landmark Way. Jimenez then unlocked the door, allowing Acosta and Lopez to enter and carry out the fatal shooting of the unsuspecting Munguia. After the murder, all four men fled the scene before Vasquez and Jimenez's staged return. The motive behind Vasquez's decision to have his roommate killed was described by prosecutors as a result of his manipulation of the other men for reasons that may never be fully understood.
The investigation led to the swift arrest of all four individuals. While his co-conspirators ultimately pleaded guilty, Santos Tomas Vasquez maintained his innocence and his case went to a three-week trial. The evidence against him was overwhelming. He was found guilty of malice murder and three other charges. Dorian Acosta, Anthony Lopez, and Fredy Jimenez all pleaded guilty to their roles in the crime. In the end, all four men were sentenced to life in prison for their parts in the senseless death of Andres Meza Munguia.
