In a tragic and violent outburst on Valentine's Day, 8-year-old Cashyon Mathis, a male, was shot and killed in his Austell, Georgia, home. The devastating event, which occurred on February 14, 2021, also claimed the life of his 31-year-old father, Dreyon Mathis. The family resided in a home on Peel Castle Lane where the fatal shootings took place.
That evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m., what began as a family dispute escalated into a horrific act of violence. Responding to a call, Cobb County police arrived to find a grim scene. Dreyon Mathis was discovered with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the location. Young Cashyon, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation swiftly identified the shooter as 27-year-old Jermery Mathis, who was Dreyon's brother and Cashyon's uncle. After allegedly killing his brother and nephew, Jermery Mathis turned the gun on himself, sustaining a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Authorities who processed the scene recovered the weapon and confirmed they were not searching for any other suspects in connection with the double murder-suicide attempt. The incident left a family shattered and a community mourning the senseless loss of a man and his young son.
