In the summer of what should have been the prelude to his eighth-grade year, 13-year-old DeSiyah Reed, a male from Douglas County, was spending time with friends at an apartment complex on Padgett Drive in Austell, Georgia. On July 21, 2025, while visiting family and friends, his life was irrevocably altered. A dispute between rival street gangs erupted in gunfire, and DeSiyah, an innocent bystander, was caught in the crossfire, struck by a stray bullet to the head.
Known affectionately as 'Turtle' to his loved ones, DeSiyah fought for his life for three days. His family remained by his side, holding onto a sliver of hope, as he was given only a one percent chance of survival. Surrounded by love and prayers, his battle ended three days after the shooting. His family, through their profound grief, made the decision for him to be an organ donor, allowing his tragic death to give life to others.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led to the swift arrest of three juveniles. As the case progressed, two 14-year-old suspects, Jonathan Camphor and Josiyah Cole, were indicted by a grand jury and were set to be tried as adults. Authorities identified Camphor as a member of the 'Young Stupid Reckless' gang and Cole as a member of 'Sex Money Murder,' a national set of the Bloods. The shooting was believed to be the result of an ongoing conflict between these two groups.
The indictment brought a series of serious charges against the two teenagers, including voluntary manslaughter, multiple counts of aggravated assault, and violations of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. The community was left to grapple with the devastating consequences of gang violence that claimed the life of a young boy who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, a life full of promise cut tragically short before he could even begin high school or continue playing the sport of football that he enjoyed.
