In the quiet town of Wrightsville, Georgia, a young couple's dream of starting a new life together was tragically cut short. On April 23, 2021, 18-year-old Charles Jaylon 'C.J.' Garrett and his 18-year-old girlfriend, Destiny Hope Kight, were found shot to death outside a house on Paul Lord Road. The couple, who were boyfriend and girlfriend, had been preparing to move into the residence and build a future.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:00 p.m., where they discovered the bodies of the two teenagers, both having sustained apparent gunshot wounds. The shocking double homicide prompted an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to assist local law enforcement.
The investigation soon led to the identification of a suspect who was surprisingly close to the victims. Daniel Payton Brinson, a 22-year-old from the nearby community of Harrison, was identified as a 'known associate' of Garrett. In a heart-wrenching twist, Kight's mother revealed that Brinson had been a friend of their family for about a decade and was a frequent visitor to their home. The news of his alleged involvement sent shockwaves through the family, who were bewildered as to why someone so close would commit such a violent act. As the investigation continued, a second individual was implicated in the double homicide. In July 2022, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office and the GBI announced the arrest of 27-year-old Dakota Wayne Scott of Swainsboro. At the time of his arrest in connection with the murders, Scott was already in custody in Emanuel County on other charges. He was charged with two counts of felony murder and one count of felony tampering with evidence. The arrests of both Brinson and Scott brought some measure of progress for the grieving families and the community, as law enforcement continued their 'persistent pursuit of a total resolution for this heinous crime.'
