On a Saturday afternoon in March 2014, 50-year-old Vincent Newsome was at the InTown Suites on U.S. 78 near Snellville, where he lived. He had been in the parking lot washing his vehicle before heading upstairs. On his way back down, as he walked along the second-floor breezeway, he was confronted by a man and shot multiple times. Emergency services transported Newsome to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Police homicide detectives were on the scene, but no suspects were immediately identified. Witnesses reported seeing the confrontation that led to the fatal shooting. The investigation unfolded as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the violent encounter in the middle of the day at the extended-stay motel.
The investigation led to the arrest of Philip Pugh two days later in Mississippi. The motive for the killing stemmed from a police report Pugh had filed weeks earlier, in which he accused Newsome of raping his wife. Pugh's wife claimed that she and her husband had been drugged in their motel room and that she later saw a cellphone video of Newsome assaulting her. However, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office stated that no evidence was ever found to substantiate this rape claim.
In April 2017, Philip Pugh, then 42, was convicted of Vincent Newsome's murder. A jury found him guilty but mentally ill. For the shooting death of Vincent Newsome, Pugh was sentenced to life in prison.
