On a Sunday evening that was meant for family and reflection, tragedy struck in the Atlanta area, forever altering the lives of those who knew Christian White. An 18-year-old Black / African American male, Christian was fatally shot on May 9, 2021. This promising young man had recently turned his life around, becoming a success story for a local juvenile justice program.
Christian had been working as a manager at the popular Atlanta restaurant Slutty Vegan, a job he earned through the
F.R.E.S.H. start partnership, an initiative aimed at providing opportunities to former and current juvenile offenders. His employers remembered him as an avid learner who quickly rose through the ranks from a fry cook to a manager. They noted that his infectious smile and friendly demeanor would be greatly missed. He was a resident of Clayton County, a suburban area just south of Atlanta.
The day of the shooting, Christian had made plans to play basketball with a friend at the Hunter Ridge mobile home park in the Irondale area. He had just pulled into a parking space in his stepfather's Nissan Altima when gunfire erupted. His 17-year-old friend, who had just exited the vehicle, heard two gunshots and ducked for cover. As Christian's car began to roll forward, eventually crashing into a trailer, his friend ran to his side and discovered he had been shot in the chest. A neighbor provided a sheet to help staunch the bleeding until emergency services arrived. Christian was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center, but he did not survive his injuries.
His friend, who was described as being extremely emotional when police arrived, told officers he saw a silver Chevrolet sedan leaving the area after the shooting but was unable to identify the driver. Investigators found several rounds in the backseat of the car. Christian's stepfather informed the police that he was unaware of anyone who would want to harm his stepson. As of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The investigation into the death of Christian White remains ongoing.
