In the summer of 2021, the life of 26-year-old Terryl Jamal Coleman, an African American male, was tragically cut short in Savannah, Georgia. On the evening of June 11th, a chaotic scene unfolded at a public housing complex located on the periphery of the city's historic downtown district. A vehicle drove by a gathering of people outside an apartment building and unleashed a barrage of approximately 60 gunshots. In the aftermath of the hail of bullets, eight individuals were struck, including an 18-month-old child who sustained a minor injury.
Coleman was among the most severely wounded and was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved to be too grave, and he succumbed to them the following day, on June 12, 2021. Another young man, 20-year-old Arthur Milton, was also killed in the mass shooting, dying at the scene. The violent outburst was believed by authorities to be the result of a dispute between two groups, though a definitive motive remained elusive as the investigation commenced.
The Savannah Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the deadly shooting. In the initial stages of their inquiry, two individuals were apprehended after they attempted to flee from a traffic stop in a red Honda that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the drive-by shooting. However, investigators were unable to establish a direct connection between these individuals and the mass shooting incident.
The path to justice for Terryl Coleman and Arthur Milton has been fraught with challenges. Law enforcement officials have indicated that a lack of cooperation from witnesses and some of the surviving victims has significantly hampered the progress of the case. In an effort to encourage individuals to come forward with information, a reward fund of $10,000 was established for tips leading to the arrests of those responsible. Despite these efforts and the passage of time, the case remains unresolved, with no suspects having been officially named or charged directly in the shooting that claimed the lives of the two young men. The families, left to grapple with their profound loss, continue to await a breakthrough in the investigation that might bring them a measure of closure.
