In the early evening of January 5, 2022, a residence in the 2400 block of University Drive in Valdosta, Georgia, became the scene of a fatal shooting. Frederick Gillard III, a 28-year-old African American male, was inside the home with a 35-year-old woman and three children, aged one, twelve, and seventeen, when the tranquility was shattered by the sound of multiple gunshots fired into the house. Responding to numerous 911 calls at approximately 7:37 p.m., Valdosta Police Officers discovered Gillard with a gunshot wound to his head. Emergency medical services rendered aid at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed detectives toward a possible suspect. Information led authorities to 18-year-old Reco Jones, Jr., a resident of Lowndes County. With the assistance of the Hahira Police Department, detectives located Jones at his residence at approximately 11:45 p.m. the same night. Evidence collected from both the crime scene and Jones's home connected him to the shooting. Jones was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Lowndes County Jail.
Following his arrest, Reco Jones, Jr. faced a series of serious charges. He was charged with felony murder for the death of Frederick Gillard III. In addition to the murder charge, Jones was also charged with seven counts of felony aggravated assault, five misdemeanor counts of cruelty to children in the third degree, and one felony count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The Valdosta Police Chief commended the swift and collaborative efforts of the involved law enforcement agencies in apprehending the individual they described as a dangerous person whose 'careless and reckless actions' showed a disregard for human life.
