In the early morning hours of January 10, 2022, the quiet of a Macon, Georgia street was broken by a grim discovery. The body of Troy Eric Sandifer, a 52-year-old African American male, was found lying by the side of the 3000 block of Columbus Road at approximately 4:18 a.m. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and family remembered Sandifer as a quiet and humble man who had spent most of his life working in construction.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of listening to music and spending time with his friends.
The investigation into Sandifer's death continued for several months. A significant breakthrough came when investigators identified a suspect already in custody for another violent crime. Denzel Cortez Rutledge, 26 years old at the time, was incarcerated for a shooting that had occurred in March 2022. While in jail, evidence emerged that allegedly linked Rutledge to the January homicide of Troy Sandifer.
On May 3, 2022, the Bibb County Sheriff's Office formally charged Denzel Rutledge with murder and aggravated assault in connection with Sandifer's death. The warrants were served to him at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center where he was already being held. Authorities confirmed that the investigation into Sandifer's killing was ongoing and urged anyone with additional information to come forward. Rutledge remains in jail without bond.
