In the early hours of January 30, 2022, a promising young life was tragically cut short in Augusta, Georgia. Kevin Xavier Coatney, a 20-year-old male, was leaving the 706 Lounge on Deans Bridge Road when he was struck by gunfire in the parking lot. He was inside his vehicle, preparing to head home, when a bullet pierced through the back window and fatally wounded him in the head. At the time of his death, he was just two months away from his 21st birthday. Three other individuals were also injured in the shooting incident.
Kevin was known as an aspiring fashion designer who had started his own clothing line called Kelly K at the age of 16. He was also actively involved in the 'Bikes Up Guns Down' movement in Augusta, an organization advocating for an end to gun violence. His life was ended by the very issue he was campaigning against. His mother believes that Kevin was not the intended target but rather an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of what she suspects was a gang-related retaliation.
As of early 2026, more than three years after the fatal shooting, no arrests have been made in connection with Kevin Coatney's death. The investigation into the homicide remains ongoing, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. In a desperate plea for new leads, Kevin's family has offered a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for his murder. His mother continues to actively seek justice for her son, organizing annual fashion galas in his memory and continuing to pass out flyers in the hope that someone will come forward with information. The case remains a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and the Augusta community.
