In the fading light of a Tuesday afternoon in Augusta, Georgia, on March 28, 2017, the life of 21-year-old Juwan T. Doby was tragically cut short. He was found shot at the Fox Den Apartments, a place that would become the final scene of his young life. The call came in at approximately 3:08 p.m., and though help arrived, Doby was pronounced dead on the 200 block of Fox Trace Drive just a half-hour later. He had sustained at least one gunshot wound.
News of his death sent ripples of grief through his family and friends, who remembered him as a young man on the cusp of fatherhood, eagerly awaiting the birth of his daughter.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect: 24-year-old Darrel Lee Jr. Authorities began a search for Lee, who was considered armed and dangerous. His appearance at the time of the incident was described as having short hair, a detail that contrasted with an earlier photo showing him with long dreads or twists.
The manhunt for Darrel Lee Jr. extended beyond the borders of Georgia. On Monday, April 10, 2017, U.S. Marshals located and apprehended him in Clarksville, Tennessee. Following his capture, Lee was slated to be extradited back to Augusta to face charges for the killing of Juwan Doby. The charges filed against him were felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
