On May 5, 2024, 22-year-old Jaleen Xavier Sumpter of Augusta, Georgia, was fatally shot in a tragic incident on the 2100 block of C Street in the Olmstead Homes area. Responding to reports of gunfire around 8:05 p.m., Richmond County deputies found Sumpter with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m. A second victim, a 16-year-old girl, sustained a leg injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
