In Augusta, Georgia, on the evening of May 5, 2024, the life of 22-year-old Jaleen Xavier Sumpter was tragically cut short. Richmond County deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 2100 block of C Street, near Lake Olmstead, where they found Sumpter, who was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m. Another individual sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a local hospital for medical attention.
An autopsy was scheduled to determine the exact cause of death for Sumpter.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrests of two individuals. Tydasia Hope, a 19-year-old from Augusta, was taken into custody and charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the fatal shooting. Shortly after, a 14-year-old male, identified as Carnell Quiller, was also arrested and is believed to be the gunman. Quiller, who had just turned 14 the day after the incident, was also charged with murder. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office has indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.
