On a summer evening in Atlanta, the life of 17-year-old Drevion Matthews was tragically cut short. The African American teenager, a student at Maynard Jackson High School with graduation on the horizon, was shot and killed on June 2, 2022. The fatal incident unfolded in the Mechanicsville neighborhood, specifically on Humphries Street SW, where he resided.
Initial beliefs by his family suggested that Drevion may have been lured out of his apartment in a 'set-up,' as he was not known to
be involved in gang activity. They described him as a loving and respectful individual who was focused on his future. However, the investigation by Atlanta police would reveal a different and disturbing motive. Surveillance footage from the day of the shooting showed Drevion asking a group of individuals to move away from the entrance of his apartment building.
Hours later, a man named Roddrick Teasley began to antagonize and bully Drevion. This harassment escalated into a confrontation during which Teasley shot Matthews multiple times. Despite the efforts of first responders, Drevion succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The medical examiner's report documented that he had sustained 11 gunshot wounds.
In the course of their investigation, homicide detectives utilized surveillance footage and forensic evidence, which confirmed that all the shell casings recovered from the scene came from a single firearm. This evidence, along with witness testimony, pointed to Roddrick Teasley as the shooter. Teasley, who was 29 at the time, was located and arrested at his apartment in the same complex on Humphries Street by a SWAT team.
Roddrick Teasley was subsequently charged with the murder of Drevion Matthews. Following a trial where he was found guilty, a judge sentenced him to life in prison plus an additional five years. The successful prosecution brought a measure of justice to Drevion's family, though it could not undo the senseless act of violence that ended a young life full of promise.
