In a tragic turn of events that would foreshadow further heartbreak for his family, 16-year-old Hakeem Flowers was killed by gunfire in Macon, Georgia, in June 2022. The young man, who left behind a son, was one of three people shot in a vacant lot on Mason Street. Friends and family remembered him as a good son to his mother and a goofy kid who loved to have fun. He was a student at Soore Academy and had been working hard to graduate early.
The violence that cut Hakeem's life short was a devastating blow to his loved ones. Less than a year later, the family would endure another profound loss when Hakeem's older brother, Donmeico Flowers, was also shot and killed. This second tragedy compounded the family's grief, leaving them to mourn two sons lost to gun violence. His stepmother lamented the cycle of violence and expressed a desire for more opportunities for young people in the community to steer them away from the streets.
In the aftermath of Hakeem's death, an arrest was made. A 29-year-old man named Kendrea Hubbard was taken into custody after being released from the hospital for an injury he sustained during the incident. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and a weapons charge in connection with the shooting that ended Hakeem Flowers' young life. The family expressed that justice was served for Hakeem with the arrest of a suspect.
