In the winter of 2021, a young life was tragically cut short in Macon, Georgia. One-year-old Monterrius 'Daddy' Brown, a male child, died on February 15, 2021, from a gunshot wound. The incident that led to his death occurred at the Chamber Cove Apartment Complex.
The circumstances surrounding the young boy's death unfolded when friends were visiting his mother's apartment to do laundry. A man named John Demetrius Simmons, who was 30 years old at the time and from Garden City, Georgia, had accompanied his girlfriend to the residence. Simmons, a previously convicted felon for armed bank robbery, brought a loaded 9mm handgun with him. While at the apartment, he removed the firearm from his pants and left it unattended on a chair. Monterrius, being a toddler, wandered over to the chair and reached for the weapon. The gun discharged, and the child was struck in the abdomen. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent emergency surgery but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched. Simmons was taken into custody after it was discovered that the gun used in the shooting was in his possession. In March 2023, John Demetrius Simmons pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with Monterrius Brown's death.
