In the late afternoon of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, the life of 45-year-old Montaego Maxwell Sr. was tragically cut short in a shooting on Rocky Creek Road in Macon, Georgia. The incident occurred around 5:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of the street. First responders were dispatched to the scene after a call to the Macon-Bibb Emergency 911 Center. Upon arrival, Bibb County sheriff's deputies discovered Maxwell with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the death of Montaego Maxwell Sr. quickly led to a suspect. Later that same evening, authorities arrested 38-year-old Dequais Threatt in connection with the fatal shooting. The McDonough Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Bibb County Sheriff's Office collaborated to take Threatt into custody. He has since been charged with murder and aggravated assault. While an arrest has been made, law enforcement has stated that the investigation remains ongoing and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
Montaego Maxwell Sr. was born on August 12, 1980. He attended Southwest High School in Macon and later earned his GED in 2008. He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, working in painting, construction, and landscaping. Those who knew him described him as a direct and real person, qualities that garnered love and respect. His death is mourned by his five children, two grandchildren, his mother, grandmothers, siblings, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Montaego Deshun Maxwell Jr.
