In the winter of 2014, a night out in Macon, Georgia, turned into a scene of devastating violence that would ultimately claim the life of 38-year-old Derrick Richone Jackson. A quiet and compassionate man, he was not a frequent visitor to the Wings Cafe, the location that would become the backdrop of his untimely death. Having been recently laid off from his job at a Perdue chicken plant, the father of a young son and stepfather to two daughters found himself caught in the crossfire of a violent altercation.
The incident, which occurred in mid-December, was reportedly the result of a dispute that escalated into a shootout inside the nightclub. Two other men, 25-year-old Cory Hollingshed and 34-year-old George Henley, who was the DJ at the club, were also fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire. Jackson was rushed to a local hospital, where he fought for his life. Despite initially appearing to be in stable condition, his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them days later, becoming the third fatality of the tragic event. Before he passed, his mother recalled him saying that he forgave the shooters.
The investigation that followed the deadly shooting led to the arrests of several individuals. Four men, identified as Markques Patterson, Eric Watkins, Vertuice Wall, and Jacquez Foster, were taken into custody and faced murder charges. Another suspect, Kenyata Lester, was also identified and sought by law enforcement. The case took a significant turn when federal authorities became involved, revealing a deeper connection to organized crime.
Two of the men charged in the Wings Cafe killings, Vertuice Wall and another man named Derek Taylor, were later included in a sweeping federal indictment against alleged members of the Gangster Disciples street gang. The indictment alleged that Wall, a high-ranking member of the gang, and Taylor, who provided security for him, had provoked a fight with a rival gang member inside the club, which led to the fatal shootout. The federal charges brought against them included racketeering, adding another layer of gravity to the tragic and senseless loss of life that occurred that December night.
