In the early hours of a July morning in Snellville, Georgia, the lives of two young men were tragically cut short. Nineteen-year-old Aiden Reynolds from Conyers and his best friend, 17-year-old John Pendrack of Snellville, were found shot to death near Norris Lake on July 21, 2022. The two were described as being as close as brothers, with dreams and their entire lives ahead of them.
The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m.
when police responded to a call about a person shot on Lake Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Reynolds and Pendrack, both having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. A neighbor reported hearing approximately a dozen gunshots and a girl screaming before calling 911. By the time the neighbor and his wife went to offer aid, it was too late.
According to family, the two friends had gone to the park with Pendrack's girlfriend. She reportedly waited in the car and was awakened by the sound of gunshots. She then found her boyfriend and his best friend moments after the shooting, witnessing one of them take his last breath. Reynolds' mother, Debra McCoy, remembered her son as a 'good kid' who was funny, sweet, and caring, and who helped everyone.
The investigation into the double homicide led Gwinnett County police to a 16-year-old suspect, Le'Quan Dempsey. Prosecutors revealed that Dempsey had arranged to meet Reynolds and Pendrack under the pretense of buying marijuana. However, his actual intent was to rob them, which ultimately led to him shooting both victims a total of 14 times in the back.
Le'Quan Dempsey was tried as an adult and, in April 2023, a jury convicted him for both murders. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the grieving families, though the mother of John Pendrack expressed her difficulty in comprehending how someone so young could harbor so much hate.
