In the summer of 2022, a tragedy unfolded in Atlanta, Georgia, cutting short the life of 60-year-old Dahlaia Roberts. On August 4th, Roberts, a female employee at the Cosby Spears Memorial Towers, a high-rise apartment building on North Avenue, was fatally shot multiple times at her place of work. She was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a community in shock.
The investigation into her death quickly led police to a nearby location, Central Park in the Old Fourth Ward.
There, they discovered the body of 64-year-old Robert Coker, a resident of the apartment tower where Roberts worked. Coker was found with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and a weapon in his lap. The proximity of the two incidents in both time and location immediately suggested a connection to the authorities.
Investigators believe that Coker shot and killed Roberts in an outburst of anger before taking his own life in the park. While the exact motive for the shooting has not been publicly detailed, police reports indicated that Roberts, in her role as a senior community manager, found herself on the receiving end of a tenant's ire.
Due to the death of the sole suspect, the Atlanta Police Department considers the case to be 'exceptionally cleared.' This designation is used when law enforcement has identified the offender and has enough evidence for an arrest, but is unable to proceed with prosecution for reasons such as the death of the suspect. Consequently, with Robert Coker deceased, there will be no trial or conviction in the death of Dahlaia Roberts.
