In the winter of 2022, what began as a festive Christmas party in Rome, Georgia, ended in a tragedy that would ultimately claim the life of 32-year-old Demond Glynn. Initially, the gathering was cordial, with Glynn and another man, Desmion Deaundre Diamond, seen socializing and drinking together. However, the atmosphere soured after Diamond allegedly said something to Glynn's girlfriend. This led to a heated confrontation between Glynn and his girlfriend in the parking lot of the Rome Civic Center.
Following the argument with his girlfriend, Glynn re-entered the venue and confronted Diamond on the dance floor. The two men agreed to move their dispute to the restroom to talk. Witnesses reported that just three minutes after entering the bathroom, Diamond pulled out a handgun he had brought to the party and shot Glynn multiple times. Glynn never regained consciousness after the shooting and succumbed to his injuries a month later, on Thursday, January 26, 2023.
After the shooting, Diamond fled the scene, reportedly disposing of the weapon, which has not been recovered. He later turned himself in to the Rome Police Department. Initially charged with aggravated assault, the charges were upgraded to malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following Glynn's death. Diamond claimed he acted in self-defense, telling police he believed Glynn was reaching for a weapon, though he admitted to not seeing one. The tension between the two men was also possibly fueled by a pre-existing feud between their families, as a member of Glynn's family had allegedly killed Diamond's younger brother in May 2022.
In January 2024, just before his trial was set to begin, Desmion Deaundre Diamond accepted a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and firearms charges in exchange for the murder charges being dropped. The judge sentenced Diamond to a total of 30 years, with 15 years to be served in prison and the remainder on probation. During the hearing, Glynn's mother, Lanikia Heath, addressed Diamond, expressing the profound loss of her son, who was a father to eight children.
