In the summer of 2018, the life of 37-year-old LaMario Majors was tragically cut short in Rome, Georgia. On the night of July 25th, Majors was at a residence when Keilan Orr, then 18 years old, entered the home. An altercation between the two men escalated, culminating in Orr shooting Majors.
Majors sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was transported to the hospital for treatment. He fought for his life for five days before succumbing to his injuries on July 30, 2018. Born on April 3, 1981, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Majors was remembered as a happy person who loved football and basketball and was always willing to go the extra mile to help others. At the time of his death, he was an employee of the Rome Housing Authority. He left behind his parents, several siblings, and two sons.
Hours after the shooting, law enforcement arrested Keilan Orr based on witness testimony. Initially, Orr was charged with aggravated assault. However, following Majors' death, the charges were upgraded to felony murder, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime. During the investigation, Orr claimed that he acted in self-defense.
Orr's case went to trial, and in October 2019, a jury found him guilty of felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison for the murder, with an additional five consecutive years for the firearm charge. Orr later appealed his conviction, arguing that the evidence was insufficient and that the jury should have been instructed on voluntary manslaughter. In August 2021, the Supreme Court of Georgia affirmed the lower court's decision, upholding his conviction and sentence.
