On a Tuesday afternoon in Rome, Georgia, the life of 56-year-old Brian Jeffery Haynes, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On August 27, 2024, police responded to a call at approximately 3:51 p.m. in the 300 block of Reynolds Street, where they discovered Haynes deceased inside a vehicle. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Eyewitnesses at the scene provided a description of the alleged perpetrator, leading to a swift apprehension by law enforcement. Nigel Oliver Hall, a 21-year-old resident of Rome, was taken into custody near the scene of the crime and was subsequently booked into the Floyd County Jail. Initial charges filed against Hall included aggravated assault and murder.
As the investigation progressed, additional and more severe charges were brought against Hall. These new charges included malice murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first-degree cruelty to children, aggravated battery, interference with government property, and criminal trespass. The expanded charges stemmed from the revelation that two other individuals were in close proximity to Haynes during the shooting and were nearly struck by the gunfire. Tragically, one of the bullets hit a child safety seat that was in the vicinity.
Services to celebrate the life of Brian Jeffery Haynes were held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Lovejoy Baptist Church in Rome. He was laid to rest at Shady Side Cemetery.
