Hugh Don Wyatt, a 77-year-old Black male from Rome, Georgia, was killed on November 23, 2018, after what investigators described as a robbery and home invasion at his residence. The first public reports said neighbors heard gunshots and then discovered Wyatt outside, wounded and collapsing in his yard, while police later said his home had been ransacked, with drawers pulled open as someone appeared to have searched through the house. The killing struck neighbors especially hard because Wyatt was described as a kind, well-liked man who had been battling lung cancer and had recently finished chemotherapy and radiation, waiting to learn what came next in that fight when violence came to his door instead.
As the story emerged, the scene took on the feel of a sudden, senseless ambush. Witnesses told police they saw a young man running from the area just after the shots were fired. Public descriptions of that person were similar but not perfectly identical across reports: one account described a Black male with dreadlocks wearing a black-and-yellow jacket and carrying a backpack, while another described a young Black male with short dreads, a red-and-yellow jacket, and a black backpack. Police said there were no obvious signs of forced entry, which left open the possibility that Wyatt may have known the person who entered, or that the intruder found another way inside before the confrontation turned fatal.
What makes the case linger is how little public closure appears to have followed. In the online reporting available, authorities asked for tips and continued treating the homicide as an active investigation, but I did not find any publicly reported arrest, named suspect, indictment, trial, or conviction tied to Wyatt’s killing. The only arrest connected to his name in the available coverage was unrelated to his death: months earlier, in April 2018, Wyatt himself had been arrested on charges of terroristic threats and a probation violation after police said he threatened a man at a Rome home. Publicly available coverage does not establish that incident as connected to the later homicide, but it remains one of the few documented events attached to his final year, and his murder appears, from the online record that is readily accessible, to remain without a publicly identified offender.
