In the winter of 2023, the life of Sam Franklin Jr., a 56-year-old Black/African American male from Aragon, Georgia, was tragically cut short. On Saturday, February 4, 2023, Franklin became the victim of a fatal shooting in Rome, Georgia. The incident, which took place at an apartment complex, was the result of gun violence.
For months, the case remained without a publicly identified suspect, leaving a void in the quest for justice for Franklin's death. However, in November of that same year, a significant breakthrough occurred in the investigation. The Floyd County Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of Jaquavious Jaquail Carter. Carter, a convicted felon, was taken into custody in connection with Franklin's murder.
The arrest came after a witness came forward, identifying Carter as the alleged perpetrator. According to law enforcement, Carter was engaged in an aggravated assault against Franklin while armed with a handgun, which ultimately led to the fatal shooting. Carter now faces a series of felony charges, including murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Following his arrest, he was booked into the Floyd County Jail and was denied bond. In addition to the charges related to Franklin's death, Carter was also charged with discharging a firearm near a public street and possession of a firearm in connection to a separate incident that occurred in July of the same year.
