In the early morning hours of October 7, 2009, a domestic dispute in a quiet Las Vegas neighborhood culminated in the death of 37-year-old Shane McElroy, a Caucasian male. The tranquility of their Upper Falls Court home was shattered by an argument that spilled from the house into the garage and ultimately onto the street. Shane had arrived home around 2:30 a.m., seemingly intoxicated, and accused his wife, Ericka McElroy, of infidelity. The confrontation escalated as Shane allegedly threatened to harm the man he suspected and placed two rifles in his vehicle.
The couple, who had been married for about four years and shared an 8-year-old son, were in the process of separating. Ericka later told police that the argument intensified, leading to a struggle over a shotgun in the garage. She claimed to have gained control of the weapon and moved outside. According to her account, Shane followed and attempted to take the gun from her, at which point she, fearing for her life, fired a single shot into his chest.
