On a New Year's Eve in Decatur, Georgia, a young Black man named Daniel Gordon, 24, was at his job as a mechanic at a local Tires Plus, a position he had started that summer and was excited about. That afternoon, a customer, 30-year-old Quadarius McDowell, brought his car in for brake work. As part of the service, Gordon began a test drive of McDowell's vehicle in the shop's parking lot.
McDowell, seeing his car in motion with Gordon behind the wheel, mistakenly believed his vehicle was being stolen. Despite Gordon wearing his work uniform, McDowell opened fire on the car, striking the young mechanic multiple times. After the shooting, McDowell fled the scene on foot but was apprehended by police shortly after. First responders transported Gordon to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Following his capture, Quadarius McDowell was arrested and charged with malice murder for the death of Daniel Gordon. During his initial court appearance, a judge denied him bond. Friends and co-workers of Gordon expressed their shock and grief, describing him as an ambitious and happy person who was dedicated to his work. They were bewildered as to how a routine test drive could end in such a senseless tragedy, especially since Gordon was clearly identifiable as an employee of the tire shop.
