Lieutenant Charles A. "Bo" Harrison, a 57-year-old veteran of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, was tragically killed on June 1, 2003, in Lacoochee, Florida. Harrison, who had served the department for 31 years and was just 15 days away from retirement, was shot while sitting in his patrol car. He was observing activity at a nightclub on U.S. Route 301 when he was struck by a high-powered rifle shot from a sniper positioned in nearby woods.
The bullet penetrated the trunk of his car and hit him in the back. Despite being rushed to Dade City Hospital, Harrison was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into Harrison's death quickly led to the arrest of 19-year-old Alfredie Steele Jr. Steele turned himself in two days after the shooting and confessed to firing the fatal shot. He claimed that his actions were in retaliation for a previous incident in which his friend died in a car crash while fleeing from police. Steele was charged with first-degree murder and later convicted, receiving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Steele's defense team considered a plea deal for second-degree murder, which would have resulted in a 25-year prison sentence, but this was not pursued. The conviction of Steele brought some closure to the community and the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, though the loss of Lieutenant Harrison was deeply felt by his colleagues and the residents he served.
