Tommy Leon Brothers, a 21-year-old resident of Mims, Florida, tragically lost his life on August 22, 2022. The incident occurred during a drug deal that turned violent. According to reports, Corey Ward, a 27-year-old man from Titusville, was involved in the transaction that led to Brothers' death. Ward, along with a woman and another man, traveled from Orange County to Mims with the intention of selling drugs. The group met Brothers on Cypress Avenue, where the situation quickly escalated.
Surveillance footage captured the interaction between Ward and Brothers. The video shows Ward performing a pat-down on Brothers before taking a box from the trunk of the car. As Ward reentered the vehicle, Brothers approached the driver's side window and was suddenly shot. Brothers sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, shoulder, and left leg. He was transported to Parrish Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene and, with the help of a witness, tracked down the suspect vehicle. Deputies stopped the car near the intersection of State Road 46 and Interstate 95, taking Ward and the other two occupants into custody. During the investigation, Ward declined to give a statement without a lawyer present. However, the other two individuals provided inconsistent accounts of the events, suggesting that Brothers may have had a gun, although no weapon was found on or near him.
Ward was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and robbery with a firearm. He is currently being held in the Brevard County Jail without bond.
