On July 23, 2024, 17-year-old Kamarian Burgess was fatally shot in Fort Pierce, Florida. The incident occurred in the 1600 block of Avenue K, where Burgess was among a group of people gathered in the area. Around 7 PM, another group approached and began shooting at them. A Fort Pierce police tactical officer, who was nearby, responded swiftly to the gunshots, arriving at the scene within 30 seconds, even before a 911 call was made.
Upon arrival, the officer found Burgess unresponsive on the ground. The group of people at the scene had scattered, and Burgess was immediately rushed to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce, where he later died.
The police investigation revealed that the shooting was likely an isolated incident, but it has been challenging due to the reluctance of the public to provide information. Major Mike Santiago of the Fort Pierce Police Department emphasized that despite the swift response of the tactical officer and the recovery of four firearms from the scene, community cooperation is crucial for advancing the investigation.
Since the incident, police have been working to address the rising gun violence in Fort Pierce. The department has implemented new tactical units and strategies, which have led to 26 violent crime arrests and the seizure of 42 firearms since June. However, the lack of community cooperation remains a significant hurdle in solving Burgess's case. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward, either directly or through Treasure Coast Crime Stoppers, where they can remain anonymous.
Kamarian Burgess's funeral services were held on August 2 and 3, 2024, at Bell's Funeral Chapel and the 13th Street Church of God in Fort Pierce, respectively, with the burial taking place at Riverview Memorial Park. His death marks one of several recent shootings in the area, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in Fort Pierce.
