Herman Denis, an 18-year-old male from Delray Beach, FL, was tragically shot and killed on March 22, 2016. The incident occurred in the 700 block of Southwest 9th Street, where Denis was a passenger in a silver Cadillac Escalade. According to witnesses, the suspected shooter, Jean Wesner Desty, 38, approached the vehicle and shot Denis through the window. The driver of the Escalade rushed Denis to Delray Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Friends described Denis as an outgoing individual who loved to dance.
The investigation revealed that Denis and Desty had previous issues, possibly involving a physical altercation before the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing a red Toyota Camry at the scene, which led officers to a Delray Beach home. There, they detained a man and a woman who arrived in the red Toyota, with the man having blood on him. Desty was subsequently arrested and charged with murder. He was booked into the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office without bond.
In the legal proceedings that followed, Jean Wesner Desty pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with credit for the nearly three years he spent in jail awaiting trial. The plea agreement also stipulated that Desty would be on probation for five years upon his release. The case highlighted the violent altercation between Denis and Desty, which ultimately led to the fatal shooting. This incident marked the third homicide in Delray Beach in 2016.
